Pike stared for a second, then her brain began to function again. Had she just volunteered...?! What an idiot she was! She wasn't ready yet! She almost took it back, almost said that she had been mistaken. But she looked at Karni's face first. Relief and gratitude were written all over it; she couldn't plunge that little girl back into despair.

"Pike-I mean, Pikea Archina," Pike said.

"Alright then!" Effie said cheerfully.

She had hardly reached the boys' reaping ball before several cries of "I volunteer" rang out. She stopped, laughed, and turned back to the crowd. "I suppose we'll have to have a drawing!"

Tom struck the sky to volunteer as he sat on his nanny's shoulders for a better view. The nanny bitterly threatened all the boys surrounding her that if they volunteered, she would quickly bash their heads open. None of them were very convinced that she would actually do it but her gorilla like glare frightened a few of them enough to lower their hands.

Kiri awoke to the sun peaking over the horizon radiating a few glittering gold rays. The silence was unnerving. Today was the day when all the bustling people ceased work, today was the day of the Reaping. This meant nothing to Kiri and she didn't alter her routine in the slightest as she reluctantly clambered out of her cot and the minimal warmth it provided. She walked carefully across the floor to avoid any creaking from the loose floor boards. She had just reached the door when she heard a whisper from across the room, "Kiri?"

Kiri turned around and saw Lita's now open eyes gazing at her. The younger girl's expression was worrisome. "Do you have to go to work today," she sighed.

Kiri nodded, "The apothecary needs me. But I'll come home mid-day and we can prepare for the reaping together," she smiled at Lita now, "I'll do your hair."

Effie Trinket carefully tallied up all the boys who volunteered, then took a while making preparations.

"Our boy tribute for District Four is..." she shuffled through the papers before pulling on out, the name written in tiny black ink.

"Tom Quincy!"

"Oh yeaah! Suckers!" hollered Tom, grinning from ear to ear.

He stuck his tongue at the rest of boys who each had that look on their faces that merely expressed, Oh boy. He immediately leaped from his nanny's shoulders, luckily not breaking his legs, but his nanny stopped him before he could race towards the podium.

"Thomas, remember that your parents are counting on you," his nanny badgered him. "Everyone in this district is."

"You sound like I am not serious about this," Tom complained. "Don't worry. As much as I know you will miss me, I will come back alive and order you around as much as you want."

His nanny knew that would not be the case, but did nothing except watch him skip blithely to Effie and try to push Pikea aside to make sure he would be captured in the camera clearly.

Effie was glad these tributes seemed especially enthusiastic about the Hunger Games.

"Well then! Let's get going," she said, and directed Pikea and Tom into the Justice Building before heading off to District Five.

Emistalia gulped, fingering the wooden block under her sleeve. Her fingers danced across the smooth wood and around the string. Taking her hand back out from under her sleeve, she looked up at the stage nervously. Effie had just left district 4, and was heading her way. She stole a quick glance at her parents, before turing to face the stage once more. She straightend her back and forced herself to remain calm. The capital is not going to see fear in me.

Effie greeted the people of District Five and exchanged a few words with the mayor before her usual cry of "Ladies first!"

She picked out a slip from the girls' reaping ball and read, scanning the lines of scared-looking children, "Emistalia Tachekin!"

Emistalia stood there as if in a trance, staring back at Effie. Suddenly, realization dawned on her, and she hesitantly took a few steps forward. Almost immediatly, too quickly for anyone to notice, her eyes blinked once as a thought came to her. No. I will not show the capital fear. Emistalia steeled herself and walked up to the stage, head held high, glaring at Effie the entire time. She stood on the stage, a brave look in her eye, and stared out over the crowd. This is no blessing, but I will make the most of it. The capital will not see a spark of fear from me.

"Are there any volunteers?" Effie asked. No one moved.

After a long silence, she said, "Moving on! Our boy tribute for District Five is... Cordy Sutherland!"

Cordy blinked. It couldn't be him. It just couldn't. It was his last and only year. His name was entered no more than seven times. Just seven out of so many tiny pieces of paper. Surely someone would have sympathy with him. They would volunteer. He looked around, but everyone was silently staring at him. He gritted his teeth. No one was going to volunteer. He would be sent to his death. There was no way he would stand against the so-called "Careers."

"Cordy?" Effie asked from the stage, looking around. Peacekeepers walked up behind him and prodded him sharply in the back. He realized he had been too paralyzed to move.

"Alright, I'm going!" he hissed at the Peacekeepers, his irritation a bit exaggerated. Slowly, he walked up to the stage, making sure to catch everyone's eye in the hopes that someone would have pity on him and volunteer, but it was to no avail, and he knew it. People would sympathize with the younger kids, the twelve or thirteen-year-olds. But him? Eighteen? Older than everyone else? No. People thought he stood a better chance.

I don't stand any chance, he thought. None of us stand a chance. Not when we're up against people who have been training to kill for years.

He took the stage very reluctantly, standing stiffly next to Emistalia. He hardly paid attention to what Effie was saying, asking for volunteers and saying some useless things about the odds being ever in their favor. Yeah, right. It wasn't odds. It was just the sick, cruel minds of the Capitol and their favorite districts controlling everything.

He hardly realized he was on the train. Everything felt so surreal, so out of place, so wrong. He glanced at Emistalia, and thought it odd that she was the one person he had noticed on the other side of the line, and she was chosen.

The odds were certainly not in his favor today.

The inside of the train had a warm atmosphere, filled with chandeliers and extravagant furniture. Not even bothering to meet her mentor or her fellow tribute, Reese found a table that was perfect for building gadgets on. She requested for paper, a writing utensil, and scraps of leftover metal, which an Avox kindly provided. She drew many plans, which mostly consisted of ideas that she knew was doomed to fail and were immediately crumpled.

However, there was one concoction that caught her attention that would be useful in the games. The only problem would be making the gadget look harmless. Reese dismissed this problem and resolved to get to it later. Plucking wires disguised as her barrettes from her hair, she quickly went to work.

Kiri froze, unable to move, to think. She heard a cry of shock ring in her ears and her first reaction was that it had been emitted by her. Then she felt a tug on her skirt. Lita was curled around her legs sobbing, "No Kiri, No."

Kiri had to blink rapidly to stop the tears that were welling up in her glistening eyes. "It's okay," she tried to assure Lita in a shaky voice. She began to walk stiffly to the podium where Effie stood. Lita's cling was unavailing, "Don't go" she sobbed.

"Lita," Kiri told her, "I need to." She gently pried the young girl off and with knew motivation lifted her head to stare at Effie awaiting her.

Rhian stared desolately out of the train  compartment window, barely thinking and not wanting to, for fear of finally realizing what was going to happen and what was happening.

He was on a train. To... wherever.

He slowly turned around as he heard a shuffling noise and realized it was the other District 3 tribute fiddling with something. He was curious, but also wary. This girl would try to kill him. Wasn't that why the Hunger Games were made?

Curiosity won. He crept up quietly behind her, the sounds of his feet muffled by lush carpet. And he peered over her shoulder at whatever she was making.

Pike sat in a chair in a room of the old, run-down Justice Building, waiting to say her goodbyes. As she waited for people to start arriving, she stared at the decaying plaster. Funny that such a rich district would have such a decrepit structure as the symbol of Capitol power. Maybe it said something about the spirit of District 4- although they were rich and favored, they weren't total toadies. Or maybe it just said that people were procrastinators and too lazy to fix the mess left over from the rebellion.

After a couple of minutes, her trainer walked in, his face beet red. “YOU IDIOT!” he bellowed. “WHAT ON EARTH WERE YOU THINKING? DIDN’T YOU SEE ME TELLING YOU NOT TO GO? YOU’RE NOT PREPARED! YOU’LL DIE! YOU’RE STILL A FAILURE! IF YOU HAD JUST DROPPED THOSE STUPID PLANTS, YOU MIGHT HAVE A CHANCE! BUT NOW YOU HAVE NO STAMINA! YOU HAVEN’T TRAINED ENOUGH! ARE YOU LISTENING TO ME? ARE YOU LISTENING TO ME?!?!?!?! LISTEN TO ME!!!!!!

Pike watched, amused, as her trainer’s face gradually turned a deep purple. Suddenly she realized that she had never learned his name.

“What’s you name?” She asked, cutting him off in the middle of his rant. He paused, momentarily stunned. She had never interrupted him before. Then he took a deep breath and plunged back into his tirade.

“YOU ARE ASKING ME WHAT MY NAME IS? DO YOU REALIZE WHAT IS ABOUT TO HAPPEN TO YOU? DO YOU????? YOU JUST-”

Oh wow. Pike thought. He’s not even going to answer. Well, there was nothing for it but to wait it out. Eventually he would stop.

After five minutes of listening to her trainer repeat himself endlessly at a train-like volume, she finally decided something would have to be done. She got up, intending to push him out the door. But she was thwarted. As she rose, he fell over, twitching, his face a strange and disturbing color.

She leaned over. Apparently he had just had a heart attack or something like that. Maybe he burst an artery. Maybe he had even- she hardly dared think the thought, it was so wonderful- maybe he had even died.

She called out the door that her trainer was done saying goodbye, and they should probably get a medic to help him. Once he had been lugged out the door, Karni walked in.

“Thank you,” she said shyly. “I- well, I wanted to give you something. But-well, I didn’t really have much that you might want, so I made this carving of a pike. It’s not very good-I had to make it quickly- but, well, I-”

Pike took the offered carving and smiled and at the small girl. She was glad she had volunteered. Her trainer was almost dead, and Karni was happy, and her trainer was almost dead, and she was getting away from her mother, and her trainer was almost dead. It was worth it.

“Bye, Karni. Keep up the good fishing.”

“Good luck!” Karni said as the Peacekeepers led her out the door.

Hoping to escape saying goodbye to her mother, she quickly ordered the Peacekeepers to escort her to the train.

Reese felt a breath against her neck, making her heart skip a beat.  Once she turned, she recognized the other tribute, Rhian. Now that she finally received a closer look at him, he appeared as interesting as the pet rock that 5 year old Angie gave her for a birthday present. Nonetheless, Reese cleared her throat before speaking.

"What do you want?" she asked. "If you have nothing to say, shoo and let me make my thingamajiggy."

Suddenly aware he was leaning right over the girl's face, Rhian cleared his throat and straightened up. He slid a hand into his pocket and felt the little projector still there from when it had dropped. It seemed like a millenia had passed since he had finished it, not a morning.

"Uh, what's your name?" Rhian stammered to cover up the awkward moment. "I wasn't listening when that woman was doing the Reaping."
