Siden's mouth curled into a wide grin as he bounded up on stage, glaring at anyone who dared take his place. He finally stood next to Effie, and smirked out over the crowd. Life was good.

Robin was the first person into the room. She sprinted over to where Rowena sat, who immediately stood up and hugged her with all her energy.

"I'm sorry," Rowena whimpered, tearing up again. Robin sat down next to her.

"It's all my fault. Really," Robin said. "Because I got reaped."

"But what else could I do?" she replied. "I couldn't watch you go up there. I'd feel even worse."

Robin bit her lip and sighed. They talked for a long time about what would happen after she left, but it still made her feel awful. Suddenly there was a knock on the door.

"Bye," she said softly, and Robin was escorted out the door.

Andry waited. And waited. His visitors mostly consisted his "friends," who were babbling on about promising to support him in the games and would bring as much as gifts as they could afford, blah blah blah... But there was still no Martia. It is quite possible that she commited suicide, but he knew she would never be so cowardly. Several minutes passed until it was almost ready to go. He felt slightly heartbroken, but he could sense she was near, watching him.

"Come out and approach me, Martia," Andry ordered firmly. "Or else I'll never forgive nor forget this."

Before he could blink, Martia revealed herself before his eyes, her face only an inch from his nose and her arms wrapping around his neck. She arched her neck and reacting, Andry laid his arms across her back tightly and leaned forward. Their osculation could not last long as a knock on the door disrupted their peaceful moment. Andry started saying everything at once.

"If I do not come back alive," said Andry with a strain in his voice, "Look in the top left drawer in my house. There, you will find everything you need."

"Please, do not say that," bawled Martia, with tears streaming from her eyes. "I cannot forgive those people, the Capitol, for making you do this already. I do not want to, but I will destroy them if you are not--!"

"Don't make this too difficult for you," Andry scorned her. "I cannot stand it if you die because of me."

Reluctantly, Martia nodded and tried to carress him again, but one of the Capitol minions tugged her shirt and stuck his thumb at the door. She was escorted and possibly Andry would never see her again. He hid his tears as walked away from the door to tour the train.

The Avox's tour was rather boring; the rooms were extravagant, but nothing really special. Once you saw one tasteless gilded room you'd seen the all. About halfway through the tour the Avox brought Pike into a room with a bed and, after some time, finally managed to communicate that she would be staying there. She was brought around to more rooms but she had no idea what they were used for because the Avox couldn't tell her. They met no one, though she had heard the other tributes would be riding the same train. Finally, in a room that was filled with lots and lots of wine, the Avox caought sight of a clock, gasped, and rushed her back to the room where Tom lay sleeping.

Pike didn't want to open the door. Tom had obviously been up to something. He probably wouldn't have any qualms about booby trapping the door so that the moment it opened, a giant ax came down and cleaved the person standing there in two. She instead made the Avox go first. She almost felt bad about it, but really, when it came down to herself or someone else dying, she would choose someone else every time.

The door opened. Nothing happened. Tom was yelling something in his sleep about ice cream and clouds and sandwich-stealing ducks, but there were no obvious traps. Pike looked around the room suspiciously. She was about to follow in the footsteps of the Avox so he would set off any traps first, but she stopped herself. It was possible, though extremely improbable, that Tom had made a weight-based trap. How he would have figured out her weight or found the intelligence to make something that complicated was something that she could not answer, but she didn’t want to take the chance. He was a mischievous little child, and no doubt his idiocy was just a façade.

She stood just inside the open door waiting for whatever the Avox had rushed her to get to. Finally, a woman about her size with a small, jumpy man arrived.

“Hello,” the woman said. “We are the District Four mentors. Are you Pikea?”

Perfect, Pike thought. Someone about my weight. She can set off all possible traps for me.

“Yes I am,” She replied in a pleased tone, smiling. “Please come in.” She carefully followed in the exact footsteps of the woman, and about six feet behind.

Multiple footsteps vibrated Tom enough to awake him and he started to peer at the newcomers. At the door, there arrived Pike, some old hag, and a midget. They must be mentors..., Tom noticed as he lowered his eyelids, unimpressed. The mentors walked towards Pike's canapé and the woman already sat on the non-whoopee cushioned side. Reacting before the midget could plop on the rigged seat, Tom scuttled groggily and grabbed his hands, dragging him away from the sofa. The man blinked.

"Um, what are you doing?" asked the man, feeling awkward.

Scattered in his mind, Tom had a plan, but it was embarrassing. Desperate times call for desperate measures.

"Now it is the time for merrymaking!!" replied Tom, cheerfully. "The games are almost near and District 4 will reign in victory! Dance with me!"

Aghast and reluctant, the man was swung around as Tom kept twirling him and plastered on the most foolish expression. Lucky for that man, Tom’s stamina refused to stay with him. Finally released from Tom's crafty hands, the man felt dizzy and landed on Tom's sofa. Phew! Tom sighed silently in relief and wiped his brow from exhaustion. He dumped himself next to the man, who was slightly uncomfortable being close to him, and collapsed to the side, snoring.

Pike jumped (mentally, of course) with surprise as Tom stumbled off the sofa just long enough to pull the male mentor away from the canapé, declare something strange about celebrating District 4's impending victory, swing him awkwardly around in random circles, and throw him onto the sofa. Then he immediately fell asleep.

It had not been subtle. Tom did not want the male mentor to sit on the other half of the canapé. Which meant that he wanted Pike to sit there. Which meant that there was a trap, perhaps a deadly one, attached to that seat.

Or perhaps the reason he had made what he was trying to do so obvious was because he either hoped that she would stumble into another trap, which really made no sense, or in order to make her look a fool by forcing her to stand the entire meeting.

Better a live fool than a dead one.

"I'll stand," Pike said. "So. In-arena strategy. Who should we look out for?"

These children are strange, is the thought that immediately shadowed the mentors' minds, but they shook it away to get back on track. The woman revealed a portfolio containing bits of information about the tributes and handed it to Pike.

"I'd regard Blitz Ell, District 1,” warned the woman. “Considering he has been trained all his life, he is capable of using any weapon, particularly whips.”

“Not the brightest bulb in the box though,” squeaked the tiny man.

“Right. Definitely watch out for both of District 2, Daze being a criminal and Gheza Mechio being knowledgeable about knives. I am not sure about District 3, so you can look at that yourself. District 6 has Allen Cedmons, whose primary weapon is double swords. There’s a maniac with brawns by the name of Disbonimic in District 7. Wren Lithgate, District 8, can throw anything with dead on accuracy. Once again, I am not sure of District 9, but District 10 has that girl, Rowena Fledges, who is capable of long ranged weapons. And Andry Luc also has some strength and makes good food, I hear.”

“I could use some right now,” Tom moaned. “Can we be allies with him?”

“Um no,” the woman replied.

“Hag,” he mumbled under his breath.

“ANYWAY,” the midget interrupted the woman before she could retort, “moving on to District 11. Those brats can use scythes, spears, you know, that kind of stuff. District 12. Sinden Vantif is another brawny guy and Melinda Sasaquayia is a thief hated by everyone… Tell me if I missed anyone.”

Pike flipped through the portfolio, glanced at the pictures of the tributes and shut it. "Looks like that girl from District One might cause some trouble," Pike observed. "I think I'll just let her knock a couple of naive boys out for me. So, since we're not allowed to be allies with the good cook, who can we team up with?"

"You've both trained. Get together with the other kids who are eager about the games, and you can knock everyone else out," the woman informed her.

"So...our allies are..." Pike opened the portfolio once again. "Blitz, Velvetine, Gheza, maybe Daze, each other, and...maybe Allen, maybe Disbonimic, maybe Wren, maybe Rowena, and maybe Sinden.  Looks like we won't have many people left to eliminate."

The tiny man shook his head emphatically. "No, no, no! You've got it all wrong! You're not allies with every capable person! You're allies with the people who might win!"

Pike stared at him. "...The difference being...?"

The woman leaned forward. "You've heard the term Career, right?"

"Of course."

"You're allies with them." She sat back, satisfied, and shifted onto the other side of the couch. The side that was probably booby trapped. Pike immediately sprinted forward, suddenly filled with the fear that her mentor was about to be smashed flat by a giant cabbage.

The sound of flatulance cracked Tom up. Okay, maybe it was not the witch, but the old hag is just as good, he thought as he continued wheezing. The man made a slight facepalm and mumbled to himself, Oh dear... The woman's cheeks flustered and was ready to strangle the brat's tiny neck until the Avox restrained her arms. Taking deep breaths, she blew some steam, but some grudge remained deep inside.

"Excuse me," she rasped. "Now about sponsors. Sponsors can give you useful equipment, food, or whatever during your time in the arena. District 1 may have an advantage of winning over the audience because of Velvetine's...appeal, to put it mildly. But you have plenty of time to win them over through the opening ceremony, training scores, and in the interviews. Tom here is certainly going to need... a lot of work on that."

Tom merely hissed at the statement and flopped back on his seat.

"How about you?" the midget asked Pikea. "Any talents besides knives?"

Pike shrugged. "I know a bit of this and that," she said evasively.

"Like what?" the woman pushed. "We're going to be your mentors. We need to know what you're capable of."

"I know a bit about most flora and fauna, natural or unnatural. I've studied physics and human anatomy and psychology, as well as some basic chemistry and engineering for creating and deactivating explosives. I’ve memorized how to create an antidote to pretty much all poisons known to man, and I can also recognize a good deal toxins by smell. I’ve also studied ornithology on the side and can communicate with a couple of species.” Pike was hoping to confuse Tom by using large words that he’d hopefully never heard of before so he would have no idea what her strengths were. By the look on his face, she had succeeded. Or maybe he was just playacting. “For getting sponsors, I really haven’t got much of a chance next to Velvetine, but Four is rich and I doubt they’ll be spending most of their money on Tom. Anyway, maybe I can befriend her so I get a share of her loot. And I'd rather not discuss my weakness right now, because they'd be a bit harder to disguise in uncomprehensible jargon and my young friend here might just try to kill me.”

The man, who had been scribbling furiously, nodded and turned to the tiny demon seated next to him. “So, young man, what are you capable of doing besides antagonizing those who will soon have your fate in their hands?”

Tom's mind drew a blank, not understanding a word of what Pike just said, but he could tell that she was trying to confuse him. His brain was so racked up over trying comprehend her words that he fumbled over the man's question.

"3.14159265...durrr...," Tom spat unintelligibly.

"It is great that you can recall the digits of pi," the man said, "but please, what useful abilities (if any) do you have?"

."Well, attracting the ladies with my natural charm--"

The woman gagged over that comment, receiving a piercing glare.

"My vision is completely perfect; I'm capable of seeing more stars you ever will. I am pretty fast too. And lastly...," Tom smirked at Pike, "setting up traps. You'll never know where you will find one."

Pike smiled sweetly at him. "What good luck, then, that I happen to have a master's at sighting and disarming them."

Pike was well aware that this was a lie. She was decent at sighting and disarming traps, and wonderful at building them courtesy of her knot-tying abilities that came with District Four, but she had never really mastered them to an extent that made her comfortable. She didn't trust her own abilities, so quite often when she was in doubt she would stay put. However, erring on the side of caution was not always the best thing to do. It could very easily make her seem like an idiot, which in the arena could lose her sponsors. If she died in the arena, it would probably be because of a trap. It was not comforting to know that her number one enemy at the moment was good at creating them. She would be extra careful.

“Moving on. What do we know about what the arena will be like?” As she asked the question, a stab of remorse went through her. She shouldn’t have volunteered. If she had waited one year, just one year, there would be so much less mystery about what she would be facing. 24 other people would have done it before her. One of them would have been Karni, yes, but still.

Well, her trainer would probably still be alive.

That thought wiped out any lasting regrets she had, and she steeled herself to throw everything into this one decisive game of luck, skill and betrayal.

Gheza had sat through her mentor's entire speech of the abilities of the other tributes, absorbing the information, but idly plucking at her belt. Her tiny knives had been taken away, which upset her quite a lot. Who did the Capitol think they were, authorizing the rules that weapons had to be taken away?

Anyway...

Spotting the other tribute of District 2 whose name was revealed as Daze during the giving of information from the mentor, Gheza smirked to herself. It was time to have some fun tormenting him.

"So... Daaaaze," she started, drawling out his name, "What's up? How do you feel about being chosen? What are you going to do once the Hunger Games start? I for one, am definitely joining the Career pack," she continued, intent upon sharing that tidbit of information. She waited to see his reaction.

Cordy stepped warily onto the train, his mind still reeling with the fact that he had been picked. He closed his eyes and tried to calm himself down, but it was no use. Ah, well, I should try and make conversation. He glanced at Emistalia and motioned to her jacket sleeve.

"What's under there?" he asked curiously.

Emistalia's eyes widened for a moment, before returning to normal.

     "Um..nothing." She muttered unconvincinly.

She stared up at Cordy, who wasn't moving. Emistalia sighed. Oh well, maybe he wont figure out what it's for... She pulled out the little wooden block tied up with thread. "This." She said simply.

The rest of the people who visited Rowena all said the same things: "We'll miss you!" and "Please, don't die!" and "We'll be sure to sponsor you!" and all sorts of sappy things she was sick of hearing. She just wanted to be on that train and get the Games over with, whether she died or not. When she was finally escorted away and onto the train platform, she was shocked.

There were cameras everywhere. Cameramen crowded the front of the line, pushing each other to get a better view of her getting onto the train. The footage would be instantly seen by everyone across Panem who was watching.  I've got to do something, she thought. Something that will tell the other tributes they should watch out for me, whether it's true or not. But she could think of nothing. Boarding the train with an angry expression didn't necessarily mean she was passionate about killing. She could be angry at the Capitol, someone she had said goodbye to, or just how crowded and stuffy it was.

Then suddenly one of the cameramen literally shoved himself in front of her face. She let her eyes register shock for only a moment before she gritted her teeth and elbowed him sharply in the solar plexus. Everyone around her paused, the man staggering backwards.

She let out a slight "Hmph," and stalked onto the train.

Jamming his hands in his coat pockets, Andry could not find awe in anything during his brief tour of the train. The furniture was tasteless, the cameramen only filled him with ire, and the sound of plunging underwater pounded in his eardrums. Passing by a crowd of cameramen, he noticed a man cowering while holding his abdomen in pain and a girl coolly walking away from him. So that would be the other tribute, Rowena Fledges, he recalled to himself. Seeing Rowena, reminiscence came to mind immediately:

Left alone as an orphan, Andry had experienced solemn days, giving off a nasty odor and starving in the poorly kept orphanage. A kind baker and her husband adopted him and gave him the atmosphere of content throughout his childhood. One day, he went to the market with the husband to help sell some baguettes, holding a loaf. The fresh smell waffered and had Andry licking his lips, but his obedience kept him from temptation. A skinny figure peaked from the edges of a nearby wall and hid from his view whenever he stared at it. Before long, the figure, barely a blur, rushed past him. Andry did not realize what happened until he felt nothing tangible around his arms.

With rage, Andry raced after the thief and tackled it from behind. Notably a weakling, the person dropped the baguette as the two toppled over each other. It is obvious up close that the thief was a girl; her tangled tawny locks covered the piercing blue eyes that never experienced moments of ecstacy. She elbowed Andry right in the gut painfully, but he firmly grabbed her arm, gritting his teeth.

"You are not getting away until you pay for it," he asserted. "If you do not have the money, you are going to work for it."

"You can't tell me what to do!" she cried. "You are not my mother!"

"Do you have one? Even if you don't, she'd still be disappointed in you," Andry added raising his voice.

The girl stopped whining and sniffled quite a bit, saying, "What the hell am I supposed to do? No one cares for me, so how else can I keep myself alive?"

"Even so, it is not fair for people who work hard to keep others alive instead of just doing it for themselves!"

The exclamation plucked a heartstring and she began to sob. Calming her down, Andry managed to convince the girl to comply, meeting up with Andry's father and agreed to work that week. Even after the week was over, she continued to work for him, since stealing is not an option. Martia was her name, for he had heard it during her friendly conversations with his father. Coming so often, she became like a sister to Andry and the two hung out ever since. At least, until...

Andry shook the mental image out of his mind, for mourning for the past would not help him. He glanced at Rowena again and the physical resemblence between her and 14 year old Martia was uncanny. Trying to be polite, he raced over to tap her shoulder.

"Hello there," he addressed to Rowena, holding out his hand. "Nice to meet you. I would be Andry Luc."

Rowena blinked, surprised Andry would be so straightforward with this. But there was something that told her it would be utterly wrong to do anything harmful to him. No one wanted to be in these Games. Except the Careers. They were all really in the same boat whether they liked it or not. Killing each other would only make the Capitol viewers happy. Which is exactly what they were meant to do. But she just couldn't stand it. She wanted to show the Capitol how horrible and stupid this was. They would never want to kill each other. So if she was going to be holding her own little rebellion of peace, she figured she had best start it now. Awkwardly, she took his hand and shook it slightly.

BESs

"Um... hi. I'm Rowena," she said quietly.

Andry nodded in return and tried to think of what to say next. Besides Martia, he has never talked to a girl casually before. The awkwardness between them was apparent, especially since the two may end up killing each other. But he knew who would win if there was fight...

"I remember that you volunteered yourself in place of that friend of yours," Andry tried to compliment Rowena. "That was pretty admirable..."

A few seconds past before he realized how badly it looked like he was flirting with her. He prayed that Rowena would be oblivious to his words.

"If I hadn't, we'd both feel even worse than we do now," she muttered sourly.
